The Workshop

A strong, successful photographer expresses an idea in a clear and compelling vision. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to gain the skills and confidence that will help you refine your vision. Part of the day is devoted to shooting on location and part to a lecture and critique of your work. Topics will include: the tools of photography: color, exposure and changing conditions; shooting under varied lighting conditions and manipulating with traditional equipment (filters, fill flash, etc.). Location shoots will include some of the most picturesque and inspiring locations in our area including Olana, and its commanding views of the Hudson River, The Audubon Sanctuary at Rams Horn Creek in Catskill, The Catskill Park and Kaaterskill Falls and Historic Hudson. These locations are suggested areas and depend on the groups interest as well as weather conditions.

Participants should have a 35mm SLR or digital equivalent with a manual mode. Multiple lenses or a zoom and tripod are also required. A polarizing lens is strongly recommended.  All skill levels are welcome, but one should be comfortable with the camera and be capable of manual exposure settings.  Film users must provide their own film and processing.  No other materials are required. You must be able to travel to selected locations each day.

Workshops are usually 2 days on weekends and cost $100.  Group size will be limited.

Jerry Freedner
Currently co-conducting "On Location" workshops at Columbia Greene Community College with George.

Jerry has been photographing for over 50 years. He studied at the New School in N.Y.C. and with Lisette Model.  In the pre-digital age he logged thousands of hours in his darkrooms.  A nature photographer at heart Jerry frequently visits the mountains which surround his home of 20 years in Columbia County: The Greens, Catskills, Taconics, Adirondacks and Berkshires are all part of his "studio".  He continues to be actively  shooting, exhibiting and participating in photography seminars.

Jerry's current pursuit is the creation of water images which are suggestive of centuries old Japanese woodblock printing.  "It takes just about the perfect mix of turbulence, aeration, form and good fortune to create these images....  as well as hours of post processing."

" I have an enduring fascination with water in all of its wonderful forms, shapes and velocities. I love the changing light upon it, its sometimes stillness, its music, the mantra it shares and the sanctuary it provides."
